Coastal Nature & STEM Classes for Kids in North County San Diego

New from Nature Scouts Collective: Adventure Scouts Coastal Explorers gives children ages 5–9 hands-on opportunities to study marine life, coastal ecology, lagoons, beaches, and trails throughout North County.

Imagine dropping your child off on a Wednesday morning and heading out to run a few errands.

While you’re standing in the grocery store checkout line, your child is crouched beside the water at a North County lagoon.

Something moves and you child inspects closely….

They discover that an animal is living inside a shell (rent-free!)

Either verbally or in their mind, curiosity-driven questions follow:

What is it?

Was it born with that shell?

Did it grow the shell itself?

What does it eat?

What eats it?

What happens when the tide changes?

One tiny discovery has just opened the door to marine biology, ecology, animal adaptations, predator-prey relationships and the interconnectedness of an entire coastal ecosystem.

Nobody had to begin by telling the child, “Today we’re studying STEM, marine biology and ecosystems.”

Instead, their own curiosity precipitated that learning.

And that’s the idea behind Nature Scouts Collective’s newest program:

Adventure Scouts: Coastal Explorers

This fall 2026, we’re taking Nature Scouts to the coast.

Adventure Scouts is a special six-week outdoor marine biology and STEM program for children ages 5–9, with each week bringing our small group to a different North County San Diego beach, lagoon, coastal trail or natural habitat.

Children won’t simply learn about coastal ecosystems. They’ll also explore them.

They’ll hike, observe wildlife, investigate marine life, study plants, journal, map, navigate, participate in STEM and STEAM projects, play games and work through collaborative challenges.

And because the location changes throughout the series, children get to experience something they could never fully appreciate from a textbook, and that is that the coast isn’t one ecosystem.

A sandy beach is different from a lagoon, while a rivermouth functions differently from an open shoreline, while coastal trails introduce another collection of plants, animals and environmental conditions.

Kids will learn that water, tides, salinity, terrain, weather and food sources can influence what lives in each habitat.

Marine Biology Lessons In North County San Diego

There’s certainly a place for books, diagrams and videos when children learn science.

But imagine learning about camouflage while trying to spot an animal hiding among rocks, discussing bird adaptations while watching a shorebird search the water for food, and  learning why an animal has a particular shell while holding that shell in your hand.

Adventure Scouts introduces children to marine biology, ecology, zoology, botany and environmental science through direct observation and hands-on investigation.

We’ll also have opportunities throughout the series to learn from local naturalists and guest educators, including a special marine biology experience.

Regular outdoor programs that combine marine biology, STEM and repeated exploration of North County coastal habitats can be difficult for families to find.

That’s one reason we’re so excited to offer this experience.

Hands-On STEM Learning Without the Classroom Walls

STEM doesn’t have to begin with a worksheet.

At the coast, opportunities for science, technology, engineering and math are everywhere.

Children might compare different shells and organisms, observe how animals have adapted to tidal environments and map the route they’ve traveled, while also estimating distances, and looking for patterns in plants and wildlife.

Perhaps your child will consider why one organism thrives in a lagoon while another is better suited to the open coast.

Adventure Scouts will also incorporate STEAM-based projects, bringing creativity and design into the scientific process.

The environment will be one where children observe, predict, measure, compare, investigate and solve problems because something in front of them has captured their attention.

This is STEM at the source.

Learning Starts With “I Wonder…”

Some of the most productive moments during Adventure Scouts may begin with two words:

I wonder…

I wonder why there are holes in this rock.

I wonder why that bird has such a long beak.

I wonder how this plant survives with so little rain.

I wonder why the water here looks different from the ocean.

Those questions are the beginning of scientific thinking:

  • Observe.
  • Make a prediction.
  • Investigate.
  • Compare.
  • Look for evidence.
  • Ask another question.

Children often do these things naturally when they’re given enough time to explore an interesting place.

Instead of separating “learning” from “adventure,” Adventure Scouts brings the two together.

What Does a Day With Adventure Scouts Look Like?

Backpacks on…And we’re off!

Each morning begins with our First Expedition, hiking and exploring our initial discovery area.

Then we gather together for games, a snack and conversation about what we’re seeing and what we might investigate that day.

From there, children dive deeper into coastal exploration through hands-on nature study, science activities and investigations.

Around 11:45, it’s time for another expedition as we hike to a new area and continue exploring.

At lunch, children settle into their Sit Spots for food, quiet observation, reflection and nature journaling.

Then we hike back toward our base area before finishing the day together with gratitude, reflections and favorite discoveries.

By 1:00, children have covered quite a bit of ground in more ways than one.

More Than Marine Science

Adventure Scouts is about much more than memorizing the names of coastal plants and animals.

Children will also practice nature journaling, mapping, navigation and foundational outdoor skills while participating in games, STEM/STEAM activities and collaborative challenges.

They’ll carry their gear, walk, explore unfamiliar environments, work through challenges with other children, practice environmental stewardship, and notice details that are easy to miss when you’re rushing past them.

Experiences like these give children opportunities to develop confidence, independence, resilience, teamwork and curiosity alongside their academic learning.
